REPRISE: The Mailbox, Show #24 Not Quite 72 Musicians
I hope everyone is having a most excellent holiday season. I'm giving myself a week off and rerunning (regifting?) my favorite webcast yet: a return to the Kansas City music scene of 2005, when I first became aware of what was going on in my hometown. Their music was a gift to me; this show was my gift to you—and a big "thank you" to them.
Stay safe, kids. See you in 2011.

Welcome to a very special edition of The Mailbox—and this time by "special" I mean deeply personal. The music you're about to hear celebrates and pays tribute to just a handful of the bands and artists who were making music in Kansas City in and around 2005, which is when I was first properly introduced to the depth and quality of the sounds being created here. With the movie 72 Musicians allowing those who make music to tell their own stories, I thought I would take the opportunity tell my story through the songs being sung five years ago when my love of music was kicked into high gear—and remains there.
I wanted to try something a little different and, at least for now, not share the playlist with you. This is because there's always a sense of anticipation when you're listening to a show and don't know who's coming up next, and then when you hear the song and know the artist there's a "WOW" moment that's always great. For now, I'm asking you to go for the "WOW" and just listen and be surprised at who you're hearing. I'll send along the playlist to Pam and Pete before the end of the week, I promise.
I can't begin to say "thank you" enough to those you'll be listening to. Then and now, you amaze and inspire with your songs, your words, and your passion. I hope this broadcast lets you know that your work means a helluva lot to me. Always has—always will.

Michael Byars has hosted "The Mailbox" since January of 2008. He loves his niece and nephews, sushi, and the smell of a record store—maybe a little too much. He hates redundancy. Hates it, hates it, hates it. In his spare time you might find him looking for some good live music, particularly at a certain bar that has lots of records. He also hates redundancy.
