Seller Beware

My Perspective

Matt Purdy tries to sell his 1969 Plymouth 340 Formula S Barracuda through online sites, encounters some eager (read: dubious) buyers, and responds to their generous offer and unorthodox transaction proposals (read: scam) via email.

Stonewall

My Perspective

The Stonewall Riots occurred nearly a full decade before I was born. And, having grown up in a small, conservative, Missouri town, it was almost another 20 years before I even heard about the events that took place that fateful night in 1969.

Is Stonewall Just Old History?

Equal Rights - LGBT

Forty years ago, June 28, 1969, a group of street people and drag queens in Greenwich Village enacted the “Bunker Hill” moment of the movement for equal rights for transgender, lesbian, gay male, and questioning people in the US.

Poems for Special Occasions

After I began to write and publish poems, I got requests to write them for special occasions.  Below are two that I wrote to be read at outdoor weddings. I did the third for a church retreat at an outdoor campground.

Something Salty in the Candy Aisle

Dent Removal

On Creativity

I have had this fantasy where the things that I do not like about my face are dents, hit and runs from day to day monotony. Were I to push back against life, I could pop them out like plastic car bumpers.

The idea is that there is an internal pressure, a personal atmosphere, and an external one.

Steady State A-hole

My Perspective

Most of us are a-holes every now and then. Like when we are driving. Or waiting in line. Or maybe when we are tired or sick. This is why the Conditional A-hole theory still dominates scientific thought in this area of study.

Accidental Fraud

My Perspective

I like live local music. It is both louder and more intimate than large concerts. And cheaper. And quirkier. And the nature of live music in small venues provides extra benefits, little amenities you might not anticipate.

What Do You Need?

Artist Steven Curtis shared this story with us at PresentMagazine.com. We loved it enough to pass it on. Be careful of what you (or others) wish for.

Words Worth: Iris Appelquist

Poetry

A poem by Iris Appelquist, written in response to Dan Christensen’s paintings that explore the possibilities of color, paint, and pictorial space. Christensen's paintings, currently on display at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, serve as the inspiration for The Color of Words, a poetry reading at the Kemper on Saturday, June 13, 5:30 PM that features several area poets.
